Overview
Potentia Energy is leading the development of a utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) designed to enhance the reliability and integration of variable renewable energy sources within South Australia’s electricity network.
Subject to obtaining the necessary approvals, construction of the proposed Harrogate BESS project would be expected to commence in the second half of 2026, with operations due to begin in mid 2028. The estimated investment value of the proposed project would be more than $475 million.
Subject to obtaining the necessary approvals, the proposed proejct would comprise of shipping containers which are fitted with the battery units and control equipment associated with inverters and power transformers. The layout would be arranged in a grid pattern with enough space to allow access around each unit. A substation will be constructed within the project area to allow the project to connect to the 275kV Tungkillo – Mt Barker transmission line owned by ElectraNet. The proposed project would be a staged development, delivering an initial 270MW / 1080MWh, with the option to expand to 540MW / 2160MWh.
