Overview

The Emeroo Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, located about 15km northeast of Port Augusta, is co-located with the existing Bungala Solar Farm and includes a 225 Megawatt (MW) system, expected to deliver up to four hours of energy storage.

Potentia Energy submitted a licence application for the proposed BESS to the South Australian Government in early 2025. In August 2025, the project received its Statement of Environmental Objectives (SEO).

Project development for Emeroo BESS is advancing. Construction is targeted to start in 2026 and targeted to be fully operational in 2028. The estimated investment value of the project would be more than $400 million.

The Emeroo BESS will comprise of shipping containers which are fitted with the battery units and control equipment associated with inverters and power transformers. The layout would be arranged in a grid pattern with enough space to allow access around each unit. The Emeroo BESS would be connected to Electranet’s Emeroo Substation.
